Visit Otari
Visitors can enjoy a unique experience in the placid gardens and surrounding rainforest. There are plantings of native plants from all over New Zealand and the original local forest grows undisturbed around its streams. There are 11 kilometres of walking tracks within the reserve, and several picnic areas.
You are sure to see many native birds here - tui, fantails, kereru.... The forest is also alive with native insects and spiders (harmless).
Since 1995, there has been extensive pest control and Otari is now a supreme nesting and food source for native birds spreading out into nearby suburbs.
You can book a guided tour to suit your interests at 04 4991400 - ask for the Treehouse.
Regular guided walks are scheduled for the fourth Sunday each month.
